PTI's Request for Election Date Announcement
PTI Urges Supreme Court to Instruct President for Timely Election Date Announcement
The Pakistan Tehreek Insaaf (PTI) political party has formally submitted a request to the Supreme Court, urging the court to instruct the president to announce the election date within 90 days after the dissolution of the National Assembly. Additionally, the PTI called for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to subsequently issue the election schedule.
The move is aimed at ensuring timely and transparent elections in the country, and this is the second petition filed with the Supreme Court in this regard. The PTI emphasizes the importance of adhering to a clear timeline for election-related procedures to uphold the democratic process.
"Our request to the Supreme Court is based on the principles of transparency, fairness, and democratic values. Ensuring a timely election date announcement and subsequent99 schedule issuance is crucial to maintaining the integrity of our electoral process," stated a PTI spokesperson.
This petition follows the party's commitment to promoting transparent elections and upholding the democratic norms that our nation is built upon. We believe that this step will contribute to a smooth electoral process and strengthen the democratic institutions of Pakistan," the spokesperson added.
The PTI's formal request aligns with its efforts to facilitate a fair and efficient election process, allowing citizens to exercise their right to vote and participate in shaping the country's future leadership.
PTI's Petition to Challenge Census Approval
PTI Files Petition in Supreme Court to Challenge Census Approval
The Pakistan Tehreek Insaaf (PTI) political party has filed a petition in the Supreme Court of Pakistan under Article 184(3) of the Constitution. The aim of the petition is to challenge the decision of the Council of Common Interest (CCI) dated August 5, 2023, which approved the census. The PTI seeks to declare this decision as illegal and void ab initio (from the beginning).
The party argues that the census approval by the CCI was unlawful as the council consisted of two caretaker chief ministers who were not politically elected and did not represent the voters of their respective provinces. The PTI contends that such a constitutionally improperly constituted body cannot make permanent decisions like approving the census, which has a direct impact on unrepresented provinces.
"We believe that the decision of the CCI is in violation of constitutional principles and undermines the representation of citizens in provinces. This petition is an important step to uphold the democratic values enshrined in our Constitution," stated a PTI representative.
In addition to challenging the census approval, the PTI's petition also questions the notification by the Bureau of Statistics to publish the 2023 census, dated May 8, 2023, and the delimitation exercise proposed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), dated August 17, 2023.
The PTI's petition highlights the concern that the delay in delimitation due to the census is being exploited to postpone the elections to the National Assembly. The party cites Article 224(2) of the Constitution, which mandates general elections to be held within 90 days after the dissolution of a provincial or National Assembly.
"Our petition aims to ensure that elections are held within the constitutionally mandated time frame and that citizens' rights are protected. We request the Supreme Court to intervene and uphold the principles of timely and fair elections," the PTI spokesperson added.
The PTI's petition underscores the public importance of the matter and seeks to safeguard fundamental rights as outlined in the Constitution. It emphasizes the necessity of adhering to the constitutional timeline for holding elections.
